Moisture/efflorescence beneath sealant on new block paved driveway

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.34 PM

Hi, we recently had our driveway block paved by a contractor (in the Bromley area) and after a dry weekend it was sealed. That night it rained and by the morning the driveway was full of large white patches and marks - a cloudy mess! Not sure if it is natural efflorescence or moisture trapped beneath sealant, but either way it has ruined the look of the driveway. Have tried applying xylene, which only helped fade the marks a little, and efflorescence cleaner, which did not work, but still very unhappy. Original contractor said it is efflorescence that will fade in time, but I'm not satisfied. When the job was first completed it looked great, so I gave him a good review, but now it looks horrible. Any ideas or help appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The white patching is calcium carbonate which really os caused through natural weathering. I would try a citric acid based cleaner. it will eventually disapate.

The efflorescence is a natural impurity within the blocks and it recommends on the sealant not to seal new driveways for a period of around 3 months to prevent the problem you experiencing the only recommendation if to keep soaking the area and over time it will hopefully fade the only other solution would be to have it relaid
