Covering my already converted garage into a self contained flat

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

I am planning a garage conversion into additional living space. It is to have a play room, and a bathroom. Understand I do not need building permission only building regs. If the time comes and I want to covert it for my grandmother to move in ie It would need a kitchen, I understand I would need planning permission, What things do I need to consider ahead of that? Is a pre existing detached garage. Am blocking up the old doors and putting Bifolds on the side. Is there anything build wise I need to do alongside the bus regs that I need to anticipate to obtain planning permission? Is it likely to be approved? Thanks for any help in advance!

I am sorry to say that I cannot help you with this enquire. You would have to check with the council to see what they say as rules and regulations are changing all the time. You will need drawings that are submitted to the reverent bodies and therefore ask the surveyor if he can or if he knows what you may or may not require. Good luck.

Converting for additional living space you should be fine, best to get building regulations approval for the works so it can be taken into consideration if you are looking to sell at some point in the future. Adding a kitchen to the conversion you will encounter problems, if it is detached from your property. From past experience it was not favoured by our local council to do this, as you are forming a independent dwelling on your plot when the plot was only designed for one. Best of luck 👍🏻

Hi, you need building reg for the conversion on the garage into a habitable room, to fit a kitchen to turn into a granny flat, you can do this though building control as they need to look at any drains that are layed and can do the works in par minted planning
