Labour costs for outdoor cabling/installation of EV chargepoint

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

We are looking to have a charge point installed for an electric car. The charge point is 80m from the house. We discussed the job with the installer and sent a video at his request. He gave us a quote which we were happy with. The agreement was that we would arrange for the trenching for the armoured cable to be done by another contractor. At our request they both met and reviewed the property to discuss the layout, with no issues raised. On the agreed day for delivering the cable, the electrician realised that he had miscalculated the distance. He explained the need for changing to a 10mm cable, which I understood. We were disappointed, but prepared to pay the additional costs for the materials. He has now revised his quote with the additional material costs and doubled his labour charge. As we are already covering the costs of trenching, I don’t understand why the labour costs would also increase. Is it more labour intensive to connect the wider cabling?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

No not more intensive, sounds like he actually doesn't want to do the work now.

There wouldn’t be any more difficulty or significant time difference in connecting up a 10mm swa over a 4mm or 6mm, especially boring you’d arranged for another contractor to lay the cable? If he had to lay the cable himself, I personally wouldn’t charge any extra or expect a contractor to charge more, definitely not a double rate!

Don’t see the need of doubling the labour cost at all... perhaps he don’t want to do it anymore or he just found out he got more mouths to feed after lockdown

The contractor shouldn’t pass on the labour costs to the client as the mistake was his. The client is willing to pay for the materials which is sufficient
