Bricklaying & Repointing

Mortar missing between bricks below damp course

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

My house is about 40 years old and has solid ground floors. When replacing the pebbles around the house I notice that the horizontal mortar is missing between every 5th brick, 3 bricks below the dpc. Is this a problem that I should worry about or is it for ventilation purposes. Many thanks.

are you sure its horizontal joint not vertical if it was vertical it would make sense it would be weep holes to release any moister collecting in cavity if it is horizontal as you say i do not see the reason for it i would repoint where missing.

All bricks above or below damp have to be full with mortar. You need to check to see how deep into the brick the mortar is missing it could just be a case of repointing brickwork or if the mortar is completely missing between the bricks then it will be a more serious problem

It’s due to rising damp from the ground or surface water . The Damp course will prevent it rising further . It’s a common occurrence in old houses especially if surrounded with a hard surface eg flags or tarmac . Normally fixed by repointing the brickwork although this leads to a different finish to the joints for below and above the damp .
