Fake Lead on casement windows

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

Hello. Looking for some advice on fake lead tape on windows and how it should be fitted/look? We've moved into a new build (6 months) and the windows to the front of the house all have fake decorative lead on them in a rectangular style which is now beginning to peel in places. Should the strip on the windows be doubled, i.e. front and back strip, as it looks like one strip of tape just stuck on the windows? Thanks for the replies and really helpful. They’re not double sealed as we would have expected and peeling getting worse. Have escalated with builder and next step will be NHBC.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

hi in most instances it is only applied to the outside. if is starting to peel you can either buy some more and replace that area. or use a hot air gun and scraper to remove all traces thanks

Any decent supplier would lead both sides of the external pane of the double glazed units. Single leading is almost unheard of in the window refurbishment/replacement industry. Your builder will certainly have recourse to the contractor who provided the units for them to be shedding lead so quickly. After many years of regular window washing it is not unusual for problems but NOT after six months.

Majority of glass suppliers especially within the last 15 to 20 years has applied lead to both inside and outside of external pane of glass to give the effect of the lead running straight through also it makes the windows look a lot more presentable from the inside looking out not having to look at glue on the back edge of the external lead work. Also the lead application should be done in the correct environment using the correct applicator tools and adhesives not done whilst to window is in the frame it looks rough and is unprofessional.
