How to fix door frame so it's as thick as walls?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

Hi, another question in regards to door frames. I had my bedroom plastered recently and they removed the old plaster and replaced it with plasterboard (dot & dab) and skimmed. Now the walls are 25mm thicker than the existing door frame. Should I attach timber to door frame so it's the same thickness as the wall? should I have the door frame replaced? can I just put thick architrave on the door frame to make up for the missing 25mm and caulk it? additional info: bedroom walls are made of lightweight blocks and the door frames are attached to those blocks. No timber in between lightweight blocks and the door frame. I was thinking of removing the door frames but I'm afraid that the wall might collapse as the blocks crumble easily. Thanks. P.S. will the added strip be strong enough when we hang the door?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would add the 25mm timber trip to the door frame and fit new architrave, pease don't fill the gap with caulk big no no

Plant pieces of timber on edge of door liner to make it level with wall then you'll have know problem when you fit architrave

I agree with the above. If you rip down down some 12mm MDF in 25mm strips. That will give you 22mm width, with the 10mm margin round the frame. This should work on most frames. Luke P.s Pack out the architrave and not the edge of the Frame as it will always crack.

I would replace the door frames with wider ones. New hinges to hang the doors would be required (if the doors were opening in towards the newly skimmed wall). If separate timbers were added they would crack.
