Back fill is there for a reason Make good again if you find it to be falling out all over I would recommend remove roof / de-baton de-nail Felt over with breathable felt Relay slate . Take care removing slate as they could be fragile .welsh slate is quit strong But take care removing . You may have to re- punch as well

The reason you can see light is because there is no felt underneath the roof tiles. The tiles or slate have a slight camber to them so light will be noticeable inside a loft. This is very common for a property built in the 1930s you will obviously have a problem if there are any broken roof tiles or slate. Regular maintenance would be advisable. Possibly you will need to re-point ridge or hip tiles.
