Can I unfill a mortise lock hole?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

I live in an old house with mortise locks, but the previous owners filled in the deadbolt hole for the mortise locks. The lock turns fine but doesn't have a hole to go in anymore because that portion of the doorfram has been filled in. I can see the spot it's been filled and am guessing it's wood with maybe wood filler or wood glue. Is there a way to remove this filler so that I can use the mortise lock again?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Of course you can, just use a drill, if you don't have one, use a screwdriver, scrape of the paint so you can see what you're dealing with before you jam your screw driver there. Cheers

Yes. Drill the filler material out ( to speed things up you could use a spade bit). When you have drilled out as much material as you need, clean up the remaining wood/filler with a sharp chisel.

I would clean out the the holes in the frame with a chisel and replace latch plates where necessary
