What size of joist

Hi We’re building a a flat roof garage and are trying to find out what size joists to use Joist span is 5500mm We were looking at using c24 9x2s @ 400 centres but checking span charts some say yes other no Would these be suitable or would we be better going bigger Any help would be appreciated

May require steelwork at that span... get a report from a structural engineer to be in the safe side, not expensive but might be crucial to solve any problem that may occur in the future and also will satisfy your house insurance too...

Looks like you're right on the limit og the joist spans. It would make sense to increase the joist size as this will also reduce bounce in floor.

Flat Garage Roof Span 5500 Based on Trada Euro Code 5 Tables 1. Roof access for maintenance only 72x195 C24 @ 400 centers = 5.52 max span with either solid blocking or herringbone strutting 2. Roof access unlimited 72x220 C24 @ 400 centers = 5.5 Max span with either solid blocking or herringbone strutting. I personally would recommend the second option in treated timbers, checking and inspecting all timbers onsite for defects before installation.
