What fittings to buy when replacing sink

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

I’m going to be replacing the pedestal sink in the bathroom for a vanity unit sink and I’m buying it online and just want to be sure I’ll have what I need ready. As well as the vanity unit, it would be: - taps - slotted push button waste (as I learnt this is for sinks with overflow hole, check me out) And this is my main question...can I use the existing waste trap that’s on my pedestal sink? Are there variations and shapes that will only fit certain sinks? Should I buy the £27 recommended one with the vanity unit? I would probably just do it if it was one, but I’m buying 2 to do the same in the en-suite. I’ll be replacing the kitchen sink as well eventually, so just as an add on - would this be the same story with a new kitchen sink? Edit: Thank you for the replies - much appreciated :)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Andrew, you can re-use the basin trap as long as it’s not damaged and has been cleaned, but personally I would install a new one if it comes with the vanity unit, for the extra £27, you would have a peace of mind. Basin traps & waste are usually 32mm while the kitchen waste & trap are usually 40mm. The unslotted waste will be completely watertight while closed, while a slotted waste allows water from the overflow to be drained, whether the waste is open or closed. Waste Styles. Waste designs vary, from the simple but reliable plug on a chain to more modern types. When you purchase a kitchen sink you can usually get the matching waste kit as part of a kit, i.e McAlpine 40mm kitchen sink waste flange chrome plated overflow grid, basket strainer waste and overflow centre pin model stainless steel flange. Hope this helps. 👍🏻

Hi Andrew. Great question. Honestly, you will not know until you fit the new sink into place. Likely it will involve some pipe alterations. Being hidden inside a unit the trap need not be fancy looking, just functional. But by now you would have found that out. Good luck, Bob.
