Gas Works

3 out of five ignitions not sparking on gas hob

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

Hi... My husband cleaned the gas hob today (!) and now three of the ignitions don't spark. They were fine beforehand. There's no debris etc in the area, and it's not a gas flow issue, they just don't spark... Any suggestions? (I rang our usual Domestic Appliance chap and he says he doesn't do gas just electric... who would I ask to sort this if we can't do it ourselves?). For now we've invested in a lighter but we'd like it fixed!! Thanks to both who replied - great advice - I turned the oven on for ages to warm it up and two out of the three of them now work again - presumably have dried out!! (I don't know how to reply to the replies, but thanks, much appreciated, and thought I'd update in case anyone else reads this with same issue and needs to know that you were right!!)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, if you're lucky, it might be ok after a few days when it all dries out. If not, get a gas safe engineer to fix it. Might be water damage or your husband could evenhave cracked the electrodes' ceramic if he was very heavy handed in his scrubbing. Most likely water/cleaning liquid where it shouldn't be though.

Give them a little time to dry out. They won’t spark if they are wet/damp.

They often need to dry out, assuming he used liquid to clean. Otherwise replace ignitors

Give them time to dry out and hopefully will be fine, sometimes if you get them wet they will spark continuously till they dry out. Failing that best to get and engineer out.
