Moving socket and extend cable

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.12 PM

I needed to move some sockets from skirting boards into the wall. The electrician I hired, who has great reviews on this site, appears to have extended to cables by using simple screw connectors and stuffed behind the skirting board (which I am going to replace so will not be accessible) Should it be a junction box and should the extension have been done under the floor maybe?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

A correct joint of this nature should have been to crimp the cables and extend. Yes ideally under the floor.

Not acceptable to have connector block joints hidden behind skirting boards nor to be used in a way where basic insulation is exposed outside the joint. He could have tried pulling on the cables to raise them higher up the wall without the need for a joint usually sufficient slack on them. Crimped joints covered with heat shrink sleeving is good but certainty don't accept what he has to done.

Ideally you would try and gain some length or install new cables. If this was not possible then a joint is the only solution. This joint needs to be accessible though. A test to ensure polarity is good and an IR test.

A junction box under the floorboards would certainly be a much better option as you will need access to the terminals in case of a fault.
