Old Wood Filler
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.12 PM
I have stripped some window surrounds of many years of paint. I'd like to leave them unpainted, but there's numerous areas where old wood filler has been used and is a bit unsightly. I've tried using blending pens both before and after treating to disguise the old filler but with no success. I've ordered some softwax colourings and will try that. Just hoping that someone has a tried and tested method of treating old wood filler to match the existing wood so I can leave it unpainted. Any help appreciated.

It all depends what the filler is filling or trying to cover up.
You would probably better getting rid of the filler and just tread it as you are the rest of the window.its character, its honest and part of the windows history.
The other way would be to splice pieces into it if the damage us that significant.

You could cover the surface with wood coloured (matching) sellac using earth powered stain and apply with a feather or very fine mop brush: Other alternatives are to replace filler with real wood very time consuming: Or replace the whole item with new!
