Fencing

Do we really have an issue with concrete posts

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.12 PM

Thanks all who confirmed my suspiciouns. We find in fact go with another company who managed to clear the whole area and fitted a fantastic wood and concrete fence. Hello all, we are just getting fencing quotes for a large fencing job that includes getting rid of a dying old privet hedge. The people I have contacted are all well respected so this may be a stupid question. The first chap has said that due to the hedge and the state of the area (much neglected by previous owners), and as the hedge roots need to be taken out manually, there will still be big roots. He has recommended we don't have the concrete posts and gravel boards we were looking at, but to go for wooden post and panel. He said that when they hit bad roots that they can't get out, they'd have to move the post position inwards and trim any panels, so we wouldn't get a uniform appearance. It makes sense to me but please tell me if this is wrong.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You should still be able to put concrete posts in. Thick roots can be time consuming but these can be overcome with the correct saw. A reciprocating saw would deal with this efficiently.

I can’t imagine roots from a privet hedge can be any problem as they never seem to get large so could be broken through relatively easy by a professional contractor

Concrete posts can still be used for this job, it will just come down to time and hard work.

You are the customer.if you want concrete posts you should have concrete posts. Nothing is impossible. Just a bit more harder graft, sweat to get the job done but the end result will be better.

Concrete posts etc will always be the strongest and most durable if there’s a root problem maybe get them out now while half the work is going on, we be worth it in the long run.
