Ok to use shingle and scalpings for sub base?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.12 PM

I’m preparing a sub base for a garden cabin 24m sq I’m building which will be approx 75-100mm sub base with 100mm concrete. I’m about to order the scalpings but have over 20 bags of shingle I could use too. My question is, am I ok to chuck in my shingle first and layer scalpings on top, then compact the lot? If that’s ok to do, I may End up having half shingle, half scalpings. Just don’t want to remove the shuttering after concrete cured to find shingle spilling out (which hopefully shouldn’t if compacted well I suppose). EDIT: Based on the replies I didn't use shingle and just went with the scalpings (type 1) with a bevelled edge to give me deeper concrete around the edges. Concrete is now poured, cured with shuttering off and looks great!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I personally wouldn't use the shingle as it is an unstable aggregate to use if it's being compacted and doesn't have any fines in it to bind it together during compaction. I would just use crushed concrete or type 1 for a more stable sub base.

If you are adamant about using it, one layer on the bottom the depth of the aggregate, if its 10mm, 1 10mm layer, or 20mm, one 20mm layer. It would be best mixed in the concrete.
