Tiling onto new Concrete Conservatory Floor- Advice please.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.12 PM

We are having a conservatory done but the timeframe is quite tight and so the concrete floor will not completely dried out and we are adding porcelain tiles to it. I have tried to research what may work and have come up with the following which is probably belt and braces but would prefer to do it once!. 1) Clean and Prime the floor using a Primer- Not sure which one or if this is needed. 2) Lay a decoupling mat onto tile adhesive - this will allow for any changes in the floor and so not affect the tiling in the future. 3) Flexible tile adhesive on top of the mat and lay the tiles. Please feel free to amend or comment, do I need a self levelling compound before point 1? Thanks

You can’t tile on floor that is not yet cured and dry , I always primer every surface I tile on , always . I don’t see the need to lay an uncoupling mat on concrete, as it is a stable surface . After drying , Always use flexible adhesive. You have to wait till the floor is dry . It’s a new floor so vacuuming should be enough , primer the floor to instructions and of you go .

Let the screed dry out completely... if the floor is still wet, the primer will not dry. If you Ditra mat the before the floor is dry, the adhesive will delaminate from the floor and adhesive. Which will leave the floor live. Yes the tiles will adhere to the adhesive and adhesive to the Ditra mat, but all the moisture has no where to go under the Ditra. Best wait for the screed to dry out completely then clean and prime with SBR or Kreon concrete sealer.

I would wait for it to dry and then do the steps you mention, its a lot of money to have to do it all again?

I agreed part of it clean and prime for first use an anti crack mat adhesive I would use would be an S2 adhesive which is highly flexible and no I wouldn't use leveling compound as you've just got another layer the breakaway cheers Andy

Yes seal the floor before self levelling, the matting would guarantee that with small movement in the floor the tiling should be ok. Most cement floors these days if put down correctly should not need matting. Only use a flexi adhesive and grout on your floor. Hope this answers your questions. Barry Smith of B S TILING.

DO NOT TILE ON A DRYING SCREED . And if it's anhydrite self leveling 🤣 screed you will need to remove the latence layer about 2mm with a floor grinder . You can remove the latence after about 4 weeks as this helps the floor to dry out quicker
