DO I NEED A CARPENTER FOR DOOR STRIPPING OR HANDYMAN

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.12 PM

Hi, I'm not sure if I need to contact a carpenter or handyman to have my front door stripped of its mahogany staining. Can anybody advise me please? Many thanks Thank you very much for providing answers.

you're probably better off contacting a painter and decorator for this.

A more cost effective option than a carpenter but retaining a high standard of work would be to ask a painter/ decorator.

Any good joiner or carpenter should have access to a quality sander that should be able to remove the majority of the stain in question. However, because a stain penetrates into the grain of the timber far more than a varnish or paint, some of the staining may remain in a limited fashion. The results will depend entirely on the timber of the door itself and its porosity, the stain used and the number of coats applied.

Softwoods are very porous and will hold the stain deeper than hardwoods but a good sander (and a capable person using it) will take all colour away. When re colouring the door always use a Seperate stain and varnish and give at least 5 to 6 coats of varnish using glasspaper before final coat and the result will be perfect
