White filler used by old owner unsure if asbestos
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.12 PM
Hi I had a cowboy builder as an old owner, he put a pipe through the wall, didnt even use a circular drill. This was in 1990. On the other side of the wall on top of the pink gypsum board is a white pollyfilla like substance. As this was done in 1990 or perhaps before, I am wondering if it contains asbestos. Please can anyone help. Thanks.

Pink gyroc plasterboard is a fire rated product designed to give more time in the event of a fire ....there is no asbestos in these boards ....the joint filler you described is highly unlikely to have any asbestos in ... however if you are concerned you can get it tested...

There's no way to tell for certain unless you send a sample away for testing. There are many companies online who offer this service.

As asbestos was banned in 2000 anything before this could contain asbestos. Therefore treat with caution and wear at least a face mask and gloves whilst removing it. If possible damp it down before hand. Hoover up any residue into with a bagged hoover so you can dispose of it preferably to a registered refuse site that can deal with asbestos. Failing that use an asbestos removal firm. Hope this helps.
