Can I loosen plug sokets to paint around, without switching off electrics?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.12 PM
Hi, I'm painting a room for the first time and would just like to check - can I loosen the plug sockets and masking tape them without having to switch the electricity off at the mains? As I'm doing a smoothing coat then mist coat and top coats, it'll take me a few days so wanted to check it's safe to leave the sockets loosened. Thank you!

I personally wouldn’t leave them of undo tape up then do them back up... alternatively cut round them and wipe with a microfibre clothe

To slacken sockets is fine, the only issue is if they have been painted around many time before and paint is stuck to them,it then peels off the wall as wel,can cause problems, unless you get Stanley blade and cut paint around sockets, and I wouldn't remove screws fully, some times they could have been cross threaded in the box,bit of a job then

It's always best and safer to switch of electric supply to socket but loosening up the 2 screws enough to ease cover away is enough to paint around socket just be careful not to let paint drip ( safety first )

Better to be safe than sorry and switch of the sockets in the area that you are painting in before even attempting to unscrew plates, best to get an electrician to advise you fully and or isolate the sockets for you.

You don't need to turn the electric off just to loosen them, but you can mask around them without loosening them.

Yes you will be fine loosening the sockets off to get behind them enough. Just use common sense and make sure it's safe if children are at the property.

I loosen sockets to plaster behind and never turn off electric so painting behind should be a doddle ,
