What is the white colour brick on this wall?

Hello, I have a back wall of the house which has a door shaped mark, the brick is whitened - I dont know whether this is painted brick or a source of efflorescence / salt coming out of the brick. Any suggestions? I want to paint the lower wall white but unsure whether its a good idea on top of this surface. Looks like old whitewash as if something was there originally which gave that pronounced shape. Definitely not efflorescence though.

Salt coming out of brick when bricks was wet or done in wet weather called ifluorescence

Given the age of the property which looks like it was built in the 30s it is possibly lime wash, the best way to remove it would be to get it sand blasted.
