What's the best thing to fill in deep holes around a window
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.11 PM
Hiya I have removed some tiles from around a upvc window which has left some big deep holes where the plaster came off. What's the best thing to fill these in before skimming? I've heard expanding foam but is this ok to use on an outside wall? TIA

Hi Tia. Is the hole in the outside then? With you saying tiles I thought inside?
It all depends on what your doing after the hole is filled. Hey there’s nothing to say expansion foam wouldn’t work! But are you planning on rendering the wall after that or re- tiling? If re tiling expanding foam is fine as your covering it up with tile. If rendering and this is an outside wall I’d use a mortar to plug the hole. About £6 for a small bag pre mixed from B&Q. There’s a tonne of ways to do it but I’d be thinking of the cost and the above would be a good yet cost effective way of sorting :)
If the hole is going to be left for the world to see it would look nasty with expansion foam showing so again, a mortar mix to fill it.

Now assuming its actuly internal side of the wall then foam would be fine then cut it down after. Or if there is room then a piece of plaster board then can be skimmed whitch is the easiest and fastest way. However if it is actuly external side of the wall then mortar would be best or a bit of foam to stop the plaster going down the never ending hole would be fine to

Hi get yourself some sand and cement mix it six to one coat area before putting in cement with unibond. Let unibond start to get tacky then put cement in once dry skim over no problem or tile straight on top. Job done Nige.

Hi given the fact you mention tiles and loss of plaster this indicates it’s on the inside of property. So my answer to that is firstly apply 50/50 part mix of unibond & water. Then apply a compound either hardwall or browning to fill hole level to existing wall. This will allow you to reapply tiles that fell off
