Wooden floorboards movement - summer or building work below
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.31 PM
Separation wooden floorboards- summer or building work below? Hi. I live in a loft flat with lovely wooden floorboards. My neighbours at the bottom are doing an extension which has meant major building work. For the first time, I can feel the floorboards separate a little - it’s not noticeable to the human eye, but it’s a definite thing. Am I being paranoid or might it be the building work ie because it makes the building move a bit? Could it be because it’s summer and hot? Or? Thank you so much for any help.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It is probably due to the heat the country has been having drawing more moisture out of the timber more than usual. Hope this helps keep any on it tho when we get back to uor usual weather.

If the major structural work below involved installing steel support beams, then there will be some settlement of the building. It is not uncommon to see some small cracks appear in the plaster work in the rooms above works, potentially it can also affect floor joists.
That said, yes you are correct, the weather, heat and humidity can effect floors. Keep an eye on it and wait until all the building works have been done.
However, notify the builder now in writing of your concerns.
