tiling on the wall of a pocket door
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.31 PM
I have a pocket door to a small bathroom. Intended renovations include tiling the whole room with 600 x 300 x 10 porcelain tiles. The plasterboard wall of the pocket door is very flexible which I assume is unacceptable as a tiling surface? What is a suitable board to replace the plasterboard with? I had read about Fremacell as a possibility or Hardiebacker. Another suggestion was 18mm ply with a 6mm Hardiebacker layer. I was concerned about ply and moisture resulting in warped boards. Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Hi yeah you don't want no movement there will just crack the joints. Think what I would do is take the plasterboard off see if u need to put extra supports in, put the 18mm ply wood on. Then if ur worried about moisture put silver back plasterboard over the top that will stop moisture getting in the ply.

Instead of using more wood. I would use a cement fibre board.

Agree with first suggestion, you really need to see if you can make the structure more solid first, we can't see how flexible it is so can only provide a suggestion. Potentially 12mm Hardie backer board could strengthen alone, but if not 18mm ply with whichever thickness backerboard gives you the most rigidity would be belt and braces

Hi you need to make the wall as solid as possible replace plasterboard wth hardie backer ensuring you have enough struture to take the board alternative is to frame the wall with timber to a solid wall then put 12.5 mm plaster board against it
