Storage area on 100mm truss

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.31 PM

I have 100mm x 35mm truss joist roof. I was looking to use the centre on the roof to make some storage area. The construction would be laying 89mm joints on top so I can still have around 200mm of insulation and lay 18mm chipboard on top. Is this appropriate way of making the storage area? Or should I not put any load on the truss joists? I would really appreciate your advice. Many Thanks

The official recommended advice is not to use a modern loft for storage...The truss has not beed designed for this extra load, however the design loads have factors of safety so the truss will be stronger than required and it will be permissible to add extra load. My advice is to keep the storage items weight to a minimum and spread things over a large area to distribute the load.

Hi that would be fine the trusses are designed to take extra loading like tanks of water, cylinders and people. So I wouldnt worry Its surprising what ive seen people store up there.

You can use your loft for storage but in a new build you should be using a system like Loft Legs XL so as to not compress or remove your insulation. There are lots of different systems at varying costs and I have tried a few but find Loft Legs to be one of the simplest methods to raise loft flooring above insulation - I have personally boarded over 700 lofts using this method.
