Can you run a gas pipe externally?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.31 PM
We have today had our new boiler (Viessmann Vitodens 100) fitted in our 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom end of terrace house and it seems the fitter decided to run a gas pipe from the airing cupboard's external wall along the outside of the property to the gas meter cabinet on the side of our house. Is running gas pipe externally safe to do? Our old regular tank boiler did not have this and now the external pipe makes our house aesthetically less appealing.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes it is deemed as the safer way to install gas pipework these days especially where there is no crawl space or inadequate room for engineers to pipeup, or a solid floor.
External pipework should be carefully given thought for driveways or areas where it could potentially be disturbed , fixings for support are absolutely essential, some engineers use a special paint to add durability, this also drives the cost up so its rarely done.

There is nothing wrong with running a gas pipe externally ifvfone correctly. It tends to be the cheaper option compared to the labour cost for ripping up floor boards etc. It is easier for maintenance of the pipework also as its more accessible. As copper weathers it creates its own protection against the elements
