Should I be able to see daylight where I’ve had a bonding gutter fitted

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.31 PM

I’ve just had a roofer fit a bonding gutter on my property I recently purchased as the previous owner had the roof changed from slate to tile and hadn’t joined it with next doors slate. The bonding gutter is the traditional one and no mortar has been used. I have been into my attic and had a look where the two houses meet and can see out under the tiles where the tiles sit on the gutter. Is this correct? Just to update, I’ve spoke to him and he’s told me the builders tarp wasn’t long enough so it sounds like he hasn’t ran it under the bonding gutter, is this an issue to be worried about?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes it is normal to see a little day light, it’s nothing to worry about as you can’t completely close the gap off as tiles don’t join to slate and vice versa so there will always be a continuous gap from eave to ridge we’re day light will seep in that is why the secret gutter is there to catch the rain water that will also seep in. Using mortar or not is down to personal option it is not right or wrong to use it or not. hope this helps Regards Frankie BT Roofing Services

First you lay felt across roof, under next doors battens. you then batten your roof at required gauge. Fix secret gutter on top , then cut tiles or slates leaving approx 50mm gap for rainwater to flow. you should not see daylight in your loft. Regards Gary

If your looking from your loft, all you should see is the under felt ? Not the underside of the tiles. You shouldn’t be seeing any daylight for sure ??

You should not be able to see any daylight! Because you fit the bonding gutter on top of the felt and batten. If you can see daylight that means you are at more of a risk of having a leak!
