Tiling

Sealing round edges of tiled bathroom floor.

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.31 PM

Hi I recently had a new bathroom installed. The original sub floor is plywood and needed to be reinforced for the new tiled floor. The floor was not sealed around the edges but I think the grout may have sunk into the gap. I spoke to the contractor who said they never seal around the edges of floors, which I thought was ridiculous, particularly as I saw signs of collapsed grout. He agreed to seal it with clear silicone, which is now turning yellow so the floor never looks clean. We have a free standing bath quite close to a wall and I am afraid to scrape the silicone out in case water splashes could run down into the gap and cause electrical problems in sockets in the kitchen, which is below the bathroom. I’d like to know if this is as potentially dangerous as I think it may be and if grout could effectively seal around this type of floor installation. I’m quite concerned about this and would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Hi when you tile a bathroom all internal corners should not Have any grout in only silicone because on movement And that goes for floors We're a wall tiles meet floor tiles they move so only fill With a good silicone to match the colour Thanks

I always use silicone around the edges as this allows for movement without cracking, I would use a silicone specifically for bathrooms that is bacterial and mildew resistant Kind regards Matt

You must silicone and not grout. Grout will easily crack due to tiny movements in floor. Seal with silicone all bathroom edges to waterproof and safeguard tiles.
