Primer choice SBR or Aquaseal

Hello to everyone, Small bathroom job. I’ve levelled the chipboard floor prior to tiling with plywood and now need to prime the plywood prior to addition of cementitious adhesive and Marmox tile backer board. I’ve read that SBR primer is the way to go but I have several litres of Aquaseal waterproof tanking primer. Can I use this instead of having to buy an SBR primer? Many thanks for any help

Use the SBR. Aquaseal is for the tanking system. If you use the SBR like you have been recommended then if for what ever reason something is wrong. You have followed all the guidelines you were given.

Instead of plywood u should’ve put hardy boards which are best to tile on timber floor and u dont need primer for hardy boards

Yes that isn’t a problem. It’s an acrylic based primer. Make sure you mix it up to the correct ratio of water to primer. Normally to prime wood you would use it neat.

Nothing wrong with aqua seal but plywood is not recommended to tile on as it could well delaminate a tile backer board should be used

Not worth taking a risk with tanking prima on plywood,
Best to use SBR prima diluted with water,
Give plywood one coat and let dry then apply second coat of prima and tile surface using a flexible tile adhesive while the second coat of prima is still tacky.
