Tiling over tiles - backer board or thick adhesive on floor

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.50 PM

I have had new wooden flooring placed around a previously tiled hearth 1500mm x 430mm. The wood flooring is now 9mm higher above the old tiles which are still in place and in a good state. I want to fill the gap so the hearth area and wooden floor edge is flush so when new tiles are laid they slightly overlap the wooden floor. The fireplace surround will then be placed on top and it is purely a decorative fireplace. Question is should I use adhesive / 6mm backer board / adhesive or simply a 9mm thick layer of tile adhesive? Or am I completely wrong and there is a different way? Thanks

Either use tile backerboards and/or levelling compound to achieve the perfect height to finish where you need.

Well you can use self levelling as it will leach into the adjacent wood floor. If what you are laying on is smooth/flat use 9mm and thin adhesive (4mm trowel) but if it's rough, you'll need a thicker adhesive say 8mm and a 6mm board. Either way, full coverage under the board so it doesn't crack when someone one day oits a foot on it. My preference would be thicker board option. Cheers, Ty

the hearth must not be equal to the floor, the hearth must always be higher than the floor.
