Drainage for tarmac driveway

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.50 PM

Hi. I have a couple of companies quote me for a tarmac drive but both have different views on drainage. One is looking to install an aco drain connecting to a soakway and the other one wants to install aco drainage and run a pipe from the front to the side of the house connecting it to the main drain. I am not too sure which method is the best and if there is planning permission involved. There is a front garden at the minute and i though the soakway needed to be atleast 5m away from the house which wont be possible. Also there is a verge between the house boundary and the footpath. Can the verge also be changed to tarmac or is that not allowed. Many Thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi connection of new storm water run off to existing drainage is only possible if you are already on a combined (foul + storm) drainage system or if you know whereabouts of soakaway or type of storm water disposal - ie into land drain / ditch. Even then most Building Control officers will still prefer or insists that any new storm water run off , especially from driveways, is fed to a soakaway. If you can not comply with a new soakaway being 5M off a structure I would advise you contact your local Building Control Authority and seek further guidance and clarification on what they will accept before you accept either quote
