Post setting for fence on unlevel gardens

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.50 PM

I need to fit a post between myself and neibours garden, but their garden is at a lower level than our. What the best way to set the posts in the ground?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi It would be advisable to set you new posts in high enough to suit a 150 / 200 mm gravel board which can then cut cut / tappered to suit your neighbours lower garden levels allowing for post to be set min. 600 mm into ground. Depending on ground level difference you may need multiple gravel boards if the drop is larger. but if ground level difference is more than 200mm I would then recommended concrete H posts with drop in concrete gravel boards for stability. If ground levels differs 600 mm + then you will need a retaining wall & more likely a structural engineers design Regards David

No need for structural engineers concrete gravel boards and concrete posts are perfect for retaining walls if done properly

put the fence post in using normal methods, (e.g. 600mm or 2 ft hole, level post on both sides) but take sizes in to consideration for height difference and add on to over all height of the fence. This may mean you will need a 3m post instead of 2.4m and you will have to cut it to suit your sizes. Also dig down 600mm or 2ft from the lower side

if you have unlevel ground the post must all ways be set in the ground 2ft or 600 as thats the recommendation you should cut gravelboard to the correct angle to suite what you need or dig out to fit if you must
