How do I replace tiles in kitchen which sit on top of retrofit underfloor heating
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.50 PM
Hi, I have 60x60cm porcelain tiles on my kitchen floor, which sit on top of retrofit wet underfloor heating (XPS boards). I want to replace these tiles but I’m worried about damaging the XPS boards / pipes? Plus these boards are covered in the flexible tile adhesive from the tiles? Won’t this leave it uneven when trying to level next set of tiles? Plus it’ll reduce the floor height further...

Hi James,
Shouldn't be an issue with the right tools and precision.
I'd recommend subcontracting the work (and therefore the responsibility) to someone who is used to this sort of work. A reputable builder or tiler.
As for removing the adhesive, it will need to be leveled off with self leveling compound
A thought... could you not just tile over what you have at the moment, put ply down first. Less hassle.

Removing old tiles is not a big job but it has to be done carefully if you have floor heating.
Once the old tiles are off and the floor is not so uneven you can re tile with no problem blending in with a proper flexible tile adhesive that are able to be used up to 30mm.
If the floor is bad I reccomend self leveling compound but not a lot, I mean max 5mm of a skim.
Tile on top of tile is ok, all depends if the old tiles are firmly in place, even one or two lose would make it difficult and they nned to be sorted before tiling.
If your old tiles are gloss finish they need to be grind to remove the shining and a proper primer needs to be used before start tiling.
