Old blocked up chimney - what's going on here and how can it be made good?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.50 PM
I'm in the process of re-tiling a disused fireplace in my Victorian terraced house. I've noticed that the 'ceiling' of the fireplace is blocked up with a piece of plasterboard. Upon removing this a number of bricks and some mortar have fallen out. It looks as though the chimney opening has been bricked up. The remaining bricks all look very loose. Hi will need to see from outside if chimney has been capped or,cemented closed or if it has elephant feet installed, the internals of the stack could have deteriorated if it has been closed, has the stack been removed from any of the rooms,as this could be remains of that work or as you say it could be that someone tried to block it lower down and bricks have worked loose, will need inspection.Baz
