Voltpen showing power on bathroom fan w/ fan isolator off?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.50 PM
Hi all, I've got a bathroom fan that I suspect died (for some reason). It's connected to an isolator, which I switched off so I could pull the fan out and inspect it for obvious failure (it looks fine, oddly). As it didn't look visually broken, I want to check that power was actually getting to it. Checked for power the voltage pen ahead of disconnecting it, no power, so I disconnected it. I turned the isolator, checked with the multimeter, power coming in. I turned off the isolator again, connected the fan again and next was to test the switch logic (it's on a home automation system so controlled by a relay). After testing that the switch seems to be switching power on/off, I have come to the conclusion that I probably need to properly find a way to test the fan. I went to disconnect it, but this time, with the isolator off, the Voltpen is reading power. I've tried checking with a multimeter while it's still connected and it's not reading (much) power. Any ideas why the voltpen might be lighting up? Also, does anyone have any safe suggestion on how to test the fan for failure? Thanks in advance!
