Power to single storey extension

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.33 PM

I'm thinking of getting a extension built to the rear of my property, how would they get power to the sockets and lights, would they spur off existing sockets in the house.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Quite simply, either extend the existing lighting and sockets circuits, or run a new circuit in. It's usually very straightforward. Hope this helps, Roy

No I wouldn't use it from the spur it depends if the extension will be attached to existing property I will run separate ring and lighting circuit from existing consumer unit if it has 2 spare mcb might have to change consumer unit

Existing lighting and socket circuits would need to be tested beforehand to make sure they’re safe to be extended to power the extension. Or new circuit could be installed. All work should be carried out by a qualified electrician and signed off by building control.

I would recommend that you obtained an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). Before you make an appointment, you should explain why you want the EICR to the, Qualified, Competent, Registered, Electrician. Ideally, the electrician will look at your electrical system and products inside, plus outside, of your home (e.g. you may have a office shed or garage), then calculate your current, maximum demand of electricity. Then ask you what you would like to add to your electrical system, e.g would you be adding a 2nd electric shower, a new electric cooker, electric heating for the extension, electric car charging point, etc. One of the important calculations is your current maximum demands of your current electrical system, then look at the proposed maximum demand that you may require and if your service fuse, will need to be upgraded to 80amps, 100amps, or any other updates, etc. You will have a good idea of what is required before starting your extension.
