How to loosen stockcock

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.33 PM

I live in London which might explain the tight stopcock due to limescale. Any tips on how to loosen the stopcock without the risk of breaking the pipe? I tried applying wd40 and turning with a slip joint piler but no luck and was conscious not to turn too hard (or is it a matter of brute force?).

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You could try loosening of the packing gland nut and applying a lubricant. I would strongly suggest though that before doing this you isolate the water supply from the stopcock in the street first. Be carefully that when unscrewing the handle the whole upper part of the tap is not unscrewing. If it comes off everything will get very wet.
