Roofing

Mid terraced batten sizes for slate

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.33 PM

I need advice on the following situation. I am re-roofing a mid-terraced property (no existing felt/membrane) and has welsh slates which are around 4-5mm in thickness. I have run into a problem with the roofing battens. The roofing regulations say that 25mm x 50mm battens must now be used instead of the 19mm x 38mm for any type of slate roof. However, the roof on either side of my property have 19mm x 38mm battens. Do I still have to use 25mm x 50mm even though my roof battens will be raised by 6mm compared to the roof on either side? Will this difference be noticeable or cause issues? Thanks for the response ADR. Can the roof not be put back together like it was (without using separation valleys), if I use the 25mm battens? Thank you.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

you can always use separation valleys on either side if fitted correctly it should not cause any issues, yes it can be put back together but the tiles will not lay correctly and will be noticeably at the adjoining roofs in reality you should be over onto the next door roof to be able to seal properly, installing a separation valley here will separate the roofs and give it a better seal & look your 6mm difference can be lost here without it showing

Hi If we come across this we use a plain to chamfer the batten down gradually to match in with neighbouring roofs to eliminate the hump that it would cause between the adjoining roofs if done correctly it will cause no problems and look as intended Thanks

The answer above is a good one. As an option two. you can feather out the battens with 3. 5mm laugh battens. Sort thin and thick slates using your skills should be able to lose 6 mil over a distance say a metre or less. Good luck.
