A lot of electrical work needs doing - full rewire/safety inspection?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.33 PM

Hi everyone, I am looking for advice on electrical work I need done on our 4 bed detached property. The house is probably about 80 years old with an extension that's around 15 years old. The main consumer unit is dated 2001, installed by an NICEIC approved electrician. It is located above the front door on some kind of board, this is in the original part of the house. There is another small fuse box in the original kitchen of the house (now just used as a store room but we want to make it into a utility). There's a third fuse box in the kitchen (part of the extension). There's some work we definitely need done: The box room (bedroom 1) has six external double sockets and one single socket that looks older. We would look into getting probably 4 of those sockets removed and the remaining ones would need to be chased in. Two bedrooms have a television aerial socket and telephone sockets we want removed. The second bedroom in the old part of the house has a number of external sockets that we would want chasing in and replacing. We want the pull cords removed from 3 bedrooms. We also need some basic stuff done, replacing most of the lights downstairs. Outside of the house we need two lights that do not work removed from the decking. The external front and back lights need replacing as they are old and not efficient. There is a shed we have knocked down that had electrical supply running from house, these are currently taped off but need removing entirely. With regards to any signs that there are problems with the electrics; I have noticed some flickering and dimming of lights (mainly in the extension). Bearing all this in mind, do I get a safety inspection knowing that I want a load of work done anyway? Would it be more sensible to skip that part and just get quotes for all the jobs I need doing? Or as a third option, does it sound like the house needs a full rewire? The house needs completely redecorating (kitchen replaced, utility room added, bathroom updated) in case that is relevant.

It may not need a full rewire. Large projects like this should be carefully planned so that you get the right tradespeople in at the right time. Electrical work is quite invasive, requiring carpets and floor boards to be lifted, and possibly chasing in to plaster on walls to get new wiring installed. A full inspection of the wiring would be of help because you can then see ahead if there would be any corrective work to be carried out as part of the overall scope. Get an electrician in early to discuss a way forward. It may not be as bad as you think and just needs tidying up. Good luck with your project.

From your description, yes a full re-wire is about due. It sounds like it's been added on and on. Get an electrician round to quote. That way you can have what you want.
