Cracks in connecting wall from House to outbuildings

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.33 PM

We have discovered a crack in our wall, from ceiling to floor. Wall is shared with next door, a single course which connects our Main building (House) to our outbuildings (toilet and old coal shed). The crack is at least 10mm at the top, gradually reducing to around 2mm at the bottom. The crack is along mortar joints AND through some bricks. I have pictures if needed. I need to know if the it looks like the movement has stopped (and can be cosmetically repaired) or is still active and needs the foundations looking at?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

That means you have movement in the foundations that's why wall is coming away

What you should do is tell your insurance company, they will send a Structual surveyor to look at the damage who will arrange to have glass tell tales as described fitted and monitored by the surveyor over a period of time. They then will prescribe what action needs to be to be taken. They may want their own builders to do the works. There may be underlying problem ie subsidence which is causing the crack. Should it be a garden brick wall A builder should be able to take on the work without needing to use “tell tales” .
