Plastering & Rendering

Painting a pkastered wall/cracks showing through

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.33 PM

Hi, just started a project doing a feature tv wall. I’ve filled and taped the joins and screws and sanded down. Problem is I didn’t know I had to use a base coat and painted straight on. Cracks and bumps are showing through as well the metal angle beading placed in the corners. What could I do now? Shall i sand down the bumps on the now painted plaster board, should I buy a primer and do it all over if so what primer is best? Or what could I possibly do about the angle beading as well, I’ve seen that its possible to use a stain blocking primer? Should I use that all over and paint over?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there, Ok, well it does needs 2-3 no coats for the cracks/ bumps to disappear. ( that given the fact you have fixed/ filled and sanded down the excesses filler on the cracks, bumps, beading) Yes normally you need to use a "white wash" , "primer" or "mistcoat" as we call it, first and after you apply the top coats/ colour. As you have painted already its all ok, just need to apply more coats, and yes a stain blocker can be used if necessary. Best of luck,

Hi, The best thing to do in this situation is pay a pro to skim the whole feature wall. As well as giving you a perfect finish to paint on the skim coat will give added protection to the wall being scratched or damaged in the future. Taping and filling the joints is just a cheap alternative to skimming and you will never achieve the same result. Hope this helps.

Fill in the cracks with joint filler and sand down. When painting put 30% of water through your paint for your first coat as this will kill the suction of the new plaster then two normal coats of paint. Job done
