Hi all, just had a roof replaced with reclaimed slate. In between the membrane and the slate there feels like loose bits of slate that are sitting on the membrane and against the battens in quite a few places. I’m guessing as they fitted the slate some broke and slipped down the membrane. If I touch the membrane they slip down further where there is a slight drape. Where do they go, do they accumulate at the bottom of the roof, or fall into the gutter - wondering if they’ll cause any issue? Or if I can expect to have to clear out the gutter? ————————————————————————— Thanks for the replies all. That is helpful. There is actually a mix of small bits that move easily - as mentioned I think this must be from cutting the slate up there. But there is also much larger chunks accumulated against battens in half a dozen places, that are maybe 4-6”. We don’t have soffits, just fascia board - the eaves were filled with cement when it was built around the 1930’s, DPM has been applied over the original sarking and dry ridge installed.
The bits should not be there as it could cause damp if felt support trays are fitted it will not fall into the guttering

They have more than likely put the broken slate behind the slate if so when installing the new roof

I’m gonna assume it is where they were cutting slates up on the roof and little bits of slates have fallen on the breathable felt and got trapped behind the batten? You see this all the time and it’s not poor workmanship it’s down to company practice and option. Personally I don’t like it so I cut all slates off the roof but I don’t think it going to cause an issue it’s not worth losing sleep over. If it were broken slates you would be able to feel bit chucks of slate and it wouldn’t slip down the felt easily. If your roof were to leak it would wash it all done to the eave and collect there it might cause a little damp but if your roof is leaking what does that matter ? If you got fascia vents installed or soffit vents that will dry the eave out anyway you should had this installed if you got a new roof fitted. Hope this helps Regards Frankie BT Roofing Services

Bad workmanship roofers do this because they can't be bothered tidying up afterthere self's pure laziness I don't think they would fall into the gutter. I would give them a call and ask them why they have done this

I'm afraid this is caused literally by lazy roofers. When they cut the slate insitue rather than removing them from batten they simply hid them under the slate. Saying that it is common place to see this. They shouldn't cause any issue and I would advise not to disturb them or attempt to get them out. Regards Tony.
