Can I use builder's band to support cables?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.33 PM
Good afternoon, hope you are all well. I have some long runs of multiple unsupported cable routing around the edges and across my loft, which are just resting on or across rafters. These cables were installed many years ago. I have read that the problem can be solved by using bendable metal builder's band wrapped around the cables and then screwed to the joists to give adequate support to meet 18th ed requirements. Is this an acceptable method of support, and if so, would each band need to be earthed? As always, many thanks in advance. Simon

Can buy the band from screwfix https://www.screwfix.com/p/ced-galvanised-all-round-band-12mm-x-10m/18298?tc=LB1&ds_kid=92700052136022876&ds_rl=1249407&ds_rl=1241687&ds_rl=1245250&ds_rl=1245250&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIk97yhZms6gIVG-ztCh012QduEAQYASABEgLlSvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Can be easily cut with tin snips or of similar tools.
And no doesn’t need to be earthed

you can use all round band, but if you are fixing it to wood, its only as strong as the wood
the 18th edition talks about premature collapse of cable supports, especially around fire escapes in stairs and hallways, if you then install the band on the wood, the wood will still catch fire and in the end crumble away eventually,
inside a typical house the celling is counted as a fire barrier, its only exposed cables that need metal fixings, ie clipped direct to the wall or inside trunking (surface mounted)
