Fencing

Can my neighbour insist I get slats on my side of the fence?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.32 PM

Hi I recently moved into a new build home, not long after we moved in my next door neighbour came and asked us if we wanted to split in to get a fence up which we agreed to. So he said he would get a couple of quotes and I said we would do the same. I got 1 quote which was for a double slated 6ft fence which I thought was not a bad price. I had arranged to get another quote because its always good to get a couple. My neighbour then sent me a text saying they had arranged for someone to out the fence up the following week and how much it would be. I reluctantly agreed to this. I assumed it would be double slated fence but it wasnt the salts were on their side and we both paid the same price. Not wanting to start on a bad foot with my neighbour I just accepted it and moved on. Then a year on my neighbour said to me that they now want it to be double slated and was I ok to half in with them. So basically meaning they want me to get slats on my side now. My garden is on a slope and the fence goes down with the slope. This is something I dont really want to do as we have plans in the future to level the slope off with a decking and getting a new fence on our side as the fence at the bottom of the slope would be a waist height if we made the garden level. Where do I stand with this? Can i just say no I dont want it? Or do I need to let them do it? Thanks

Your neighbour has no grounds on which to demand that you get your side of the fence cladded with what I assume would be feather edge boards. The fact that you accepted the construction side of the fence when it was installed was very good of you and if he now wants to have your side clad then tell him that you are happy to have it done but at his expense because you have future plans for your garden and will not waste your money on something that does not need doing although if he pays your side will look much nicer.

Hi, you should look at the deeds of your house , it will show you which side is yours , ( left or right ) you should not to agree to split the cost for the fence if it is your neighbours side , you fit what ever style of fence on your side and let your neighbor do the same on their side , no one splits the cost of any fence , tell him no, hope this helps
