Musty smell - old period property

Hello, I have noticed a damp, musty, gone off smell in a section of our hallway and living room. Our house is a listed property over 200 years old. The smell is not constant but has been very bad today. No obvious signs of damp anywhere. Would anyone be able to give me some advice on what it might be? Or what investigation I should do? Thank you

Someone needs to see the property in order to get a more accurate answer. More likely there is humidity into the walls or floor, it all depends how the property was built.
