Painting & Decorating

White Exterior Paint - Dull and Yellow

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Edit: I should have been clearer sorry. The house had never been painted before, built 40 years ago. The paint included in the quote was Sandtex, wasn’t until later I realised they didn’t use that. We have a small amount of brickwork which was also supposed to be painted with Sandtex Vermont Grey but they used something else and told me it was Sandtex. **Im not going to get the same people back, need to cut my losses I think, they also fitted guttering but part of it fell off and other parts leaking within a couple of days, they used joints from my old guttering and painted them..... Hi- I had my house painted recently and the roughcast that covers the majority was done white. It has gone a very dull, almost a yellow colour. It’s a semi detached and the house next door also has white and the difference stands out significantly. ( they had it painted 3 years ago) The walls weren’t cleaned before painting (first time painted in 40 years) and I found out the paint we ordered hadn’t been used, I’m not sure if this is part of the problem. Is there an easy way to fix this or a certain type of paint I could use? I was hoping if I give it a coat of something myself it might look better, I’ve already paid the painter in full and it wasn’t cheap, I was hoping not to get someone else in due to the cost.. Thanks in advance.

You can do it your self by purchasing better quality paint with brighter tone colour.

Discolouration is usually a reaction to oxidization. This problem is usually a avoided with an undercoat and use of the correct paint.

Worthing
Call the supposed decorator back and get him to redo another couple coats I would advise santex but weathershield is just as good, assuming it’s the masonry that we’re talking about? If not sand back woodwork weathershield undercoat and then topcoat. Sounds like no stabilising solution was used and cheap paint . Only thing you can do is go over it with decent paint , do you know what paint was actually used ? Sorry you’ve had a bad experience we are not all cowboys . Did you get them off here ? If so leave a review detailing all the faults .

the 40 year old base paint is bleeding through the new water based paint, A simple and quicker solution would be to cover the existing paint with a good coat of white oil based undercoat, if you wishyou may give it a coat of a good quality weathershield paint,it could well be that the result from the white undercoat suits your needs, and as such save further expence and effort
