Kitchen Fitting

Worktop has had water ingress twice despite refitting whole new worktop

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

We had a worktop fitted by an experienced joiner but the join chipboard blew with only minimal water contact. Never had the issue before with previous worktop of over 20 years with join then been even nearer the sink. Had new worktop fitted and same thing happened within weeks despite meticulous care to not let any water settle on worktop. Second opinion sought who confirmed the join seemed sound and tested 0% for moisture in the join. Can someone advise me please if this could be a fault with the worktop? Thanks, Donna

Sounds like your experienced fitter wasn’t very experienced ! Best thing to do with almost every joint is Colorfill it top and bottom of the joint, use a whole tube for each joint, let it cure and you shouldn’t have a problem.

A tube of color fill should be used with each work top joint . Then once the bolts are tightened up the exesss will squeeze out then ready to wipe off leaving a water proof joint

Silicone is one of the better ways if sealing raw chipboard work tops, but I prefer to use an epoxy resin and this is used on boats and have the best seal. Both must be sealed carefully not leaving any misses as water/moisture will find it's way there and ruin it. Remember "water kills kitchens".

Over the last couple of years the laminate on the worktop has got thinner and thinner. Certain worktops like the ikea ones seem to get water damaged a lot easier. As above one colour fill tube should be used on each joint to make it water proof.
