Transformer trips the RCD fuse

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Hi, I have just installed a 3000w step down transformer (220-240v to 110-120v) in my garage to power a 110v router. I have wired it through a NVR safety switch but when I turn the transformer on and power the router the mains RCD switch in the house fuse board trips. The router is max 1500w with a soft start and the first time I tried to turn it on the router would not continue unless I held the on switch on the NVR continuously. Is there a way to beef up the amperage to my garage while still protecting the 240v supplies so I can use the transformer and other power tools without tripping the main electrical supply to the garage? I’d like to keep the wiring intact from the fuse board to the external garage but the RCD switch also powers the downstairs sockets in the house. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You really need an electrician to come in and do a full test on that part of the wiring. Once tested they will be able to diagnose the issue and offer a solution. Such as isolating the garage supply from everything else by putting it on its own sub board and RCD next to your existing board.

Think the comments as above are right. An elcectrician would in first instance ensure the wiring integrity and load capability of the supply in both the house and garage was up to the job and then go from there. The transformer/switch in themselves should not cause this. Potential causes volt drop or a current leakage (thats why the RCD is probably tripping)

Might be worth considering a separate consumer unit to the garage with its own rcd or rcbo and earth spike to isolate the supply. Have a word with your electrician as it will need to be signed off.
