Shaving 10cm height off an internal door?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Hi Our living room and kitchen doors (bizarrely) are 1884mm and 1875mm respectively and we're looking to replace them after moving in. However doors for sale generally come in a standard 1981mm size and only have 20mm or so that you can shave off. We don't want to have major work done to alter the frame, or height, we just want to ideally hang new doors on the same frames. What would be the best way to go about this? Are there particular doors which would be better to try and shave down?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Unfortunately with standard sized doors you will have to trim them down equally both from the top and the bottom to allow them to sit in the frame and still maintain a good look, however this may take longer and cost you a bit more 👍

You can get custom-sized doors from major door dealers (just search "custom sized doors" on your favourite search engine). They do cost about £125 extra, but you get doors that are correctly proportioned and in the style you want. Otherwise. if you are happy with flush doors, you can get solid core door blanks which can be cut to any size. You could always add moulding to the doors.

It does depend on the style of door. If its just a flush door its no problem cutting 100mm of the bottom along as you infill the internal void with timber. If its a paneled door I agree with the previous answer but top and bottom will need infill pieces in the door . There are companies out there that will manufacture a door to specific sizes regardless of style of door .

A common, modern moulded door will only have adjustment of 5mm or so on every side as they are a hollow door with a 10mm frame. It is possible to remove more - exposing the internal void but this must be in filled with timber. Custom size doors are expensive but definitely an option Solid pine doors are still available to buy - and are your only option of you wish to remove substantial material to allow it to fit into a smaller than a standard size frame. To achieve an even look, it is advisable to take even amounts from top and bottom rails. Hope this helps
