New Driveway to be converted from a front garden

Anonymous user 16 March 2024 - 2.31 PM

Can anyone please help with an answer. I have had a quote of a tradesman for my drive. There is currently a front garden to be converted to a tarmac driveway. The tradesman says that there wont be a weed membrane needed and also only a single layer of tarmac which would be 6mm Sma. Is that correct because as i understand there needs to be 2 layers of tarmac the top being a wearing course. Any suggestions/answers will be much appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Any lawn area min 100-150m mot type 1. 60-75m base tarmac + 30m topping tarmac, anything less i would not guarantee work. And of course membrane a must

The front garden will be the main point the weight of the vehicles will be. Depending what vehicles you have going on there if its just cars, It needs to be a minimum of 100mm -150mm type 1 sub base. Then a minimum of 80mm Tarmac 50mm depth of 20mm Base Course and a 30mm wearing course. Membrane will definitely be needed to avoid any weeds growing through.
