Post size for covered canopy?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Hi, I'm building a canopy over my bbq/pizza oven/patio. It will be 3.6m x 2.4m. (it won't be fixed to any walls) I was going to use 6x6 posts then joist the roof section with 47x225 . I'm struggling to get hold of any 6x6 posts... Will I get away with using 4x4 posts? Posts will only be in the corners, none in the centre of the 3.6m span. Thanks.

It depends on what you are putting on your roof if you Are Using a light sheet material 4 by 4 posts are strong enough make your you collar tie to keep your roof from spreading also put 45 degree braces from post to wall plate to strengthen structure make sure post is well concreted in paint end of post with bitumen paint before concreting in as the bottom of the post always rots first
